Hydrogen Generator Fuel Savings
We now have enough data to state unequivocally that our Hydrogen Generators are
saving enormous amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel every day.
Effective March 1, 2007 we calculate we have kept 988,000 pounds of
CO2 from entering our atmosphere for every 100 Hydrogen Generators we sell.
Our customers report an average saving of 10 gallons of fuel every week.
Multiply that by 52 weeks and you have a saving of 520 gallons of fuel per year
or, in dollars saved (figuring $2.00 per gallon), a whopping $1,040 annually.
But, even more inportant than the dollars saved by each generator installation,
is the amount of pollution avoided. If every generator installation saves 10 gallons
per week, 1,000 installations = 520,000 gallons saved every year and 1,000,000
installations = 520 million gallons saved. Now we're talking about real progress!
Well, it's true we haven't yet reached 1,000,000 installations but the word is getting out
and that milestone will happen sooner or later.
We asked Tamalpais Union High School District automotive teacher, Lisa Miller,
how much hydrocarbon pollution is in a gallon of gasoline and here's what she found:
"I have never bothered to figure out the amount of HC’s in one gallon of gas.
Your question prompted me to look around a bit. I found several different
answers, but the one that I found most interesting (and is probably most
accurate), I found on EPA’s website. I found a table that posted 8.78 kg of CO2
emissions per gallon of gas. This equates to a little over 19 pounds,
which may sound crazy since a gallon of gas weighs only a little over 6 pounds.
But as you know, the mass of the CO2 is greater than the mass of the original
hydrocarbons since an oxygen atom weighs so much more than a hydrogen
atom and carbon atom. I still find the 19 lbs a little hard to believe.
I imagine that may be the case in an ideal situation where complete combustion is occurring
and only water and CO2 are produced. This never is really the case, though.
Engines are not perfect and some of the atmospheric nitrogen that runs through is going
to combine with the oxygen and produce N20 and NO. Also some of the
hydrocarbons will be unburned and come out the tailpipe as various
HC's, and some partially burnt HC’s will come out as CO."
What Lisa discovered is what we've been telling people for what seems like forever.
When hydrocarbons burn, they form enormous amounts of greenhouse gas
due to being combined with oxygen - the gas that allows combustion to occur
in the first place. The combination of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide,
nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, unburned soot and carbon residue,
are what's heating this planet's atmosphere.
What's so disturbing is we haven't seen a single program by a major oil company
(listen up, Mobil, Chevron, Shell, etc.) that will help wean us off of
petroleum products. They apparently are using their billions in profits to look for more
oil, produce more gasoline and diesel fuel and pollute our planet further.
What's up with these companies? Is stockholder profits more important than converting
transportation to a hydrogen economy producing zero pollution?
Sure, there are always going to be greenhouse gasses produced by means other
than transportation but, that single source of pollution is controllable and that fact is
being proven everyday by our little company we call National Vapor Industries, Inc.
What if just one oil company used $1 billion in profits to supply hydrogen generators
to the auto industry? And suppose, for the sake of argument, that
these units could be mass-produced for $250 apiece. The result would be a
staggering savings amounting to more than 2 billion gallons of fuel saved annually.
Is that likely to happen? It's probably about as likely as finding
intelligent life elsewhere in our solar system.
In the meantime, we'll continue to market hydrogen generators and do our best
to reduce as much pollution and greenhouse gas as we can. Thanks for helping
